We are now in the last few weeks of the second part of our big trek around Australia. Things have slowed up a lot and we are now spending 10 to 12 days at most of the caravan parks we are staying in. My last blog came from Cania Gorge and this lovely spot in the National Park has been one of the favourite places we have stayed at. We went there on the advice of Sally and Kent who we met last year on our whaling trip from Hervey Bay. It certainly lived up to all our expectations and we are so grateful we took their advice. It was terribly dry in there and I'm sure it all looks better with everything green but it had a special feel about it. Jim and I went for our first bush walk for ages and saw some lovely caves with great rock formations and some amazing views over the gorge. Sally, Kent and their 5year old twin boys Callum and Connor came down from Moura to spend a night with us in their camper trailer. It was great to catch up with them all again and so kind of them to drive about 240 kms return to see us. Distances don't mean so much to Australians. That will be the last time we will spend in the bush on this trip and I will really miss the birds and animals.
We then drove to Hervey Bay where we had stayed last year and our first surprise was the empty caravan spaces in this beach side caravan park. It was much quieter than last year. We walked to the beach most days and just sat and read and swam. It's a very hard life!!
Noosa was our next stop and if we hadn't booked into Maroochydore we would have stayed longer there. This camp is right on the Noosa River at Noosaville and with all the boats and ferry traffic there is always something going on. This camp was really full and most of the caravanners were people who had stayed here for the past 12 years or so and stayed for 4 months on a trot. Needless to say it is a very difficult camp to get into as they all book their sites two years in advance. We just loved it there and spent most days sunbathing on the river and watching the locals enjoy themselves. Jenny and Warren, friends from Waikanae, came up and had a day with us from their apartment in Alexandra Headland. It was great to catch up with all the news and to have a day with friends. While we were in Noosa we went to see the storage firm where we are leaving the car and caravan over the summer months. This is a huge complex with outdoor and undercover storage available. Noosa Beach lost most of its sand during the storms earlier this year but it has now been replaced and there is big new board walk being built along the front of the hotels and apartments. The beach was very busy when we went there last Sunday and finding a car park takes longer than it takes to walk up both sides of Hastings Street.
We are now in Cotton Tree near Maroochydore. School holidays start here on Friday so most of the Victorians and people from New South Wales have headed off home leaving quite a few empty sites but I have been assured, come Friday evening, all those spaces will be filled with loving families. I heard one local call the school holidays “Feral Fortnight”. We had a trip to Surfers on Tuesday to pick up some mail and called on Nicola, Adrian and the girls in North Lakes to give them a surprise.
It was great to see them all again after nearly 6 months and to find them all happy and looking so well. They are all coming up here for the day on Sunday.
We haven't taken any photos over the past few weeks so this blog will have to be without any added colour. I don't know where we will be for the next blog but by then I hope to have some photos to add to my newsletter.
